Wilson Oruma, born on December 30, 1976, is a retired Nigerian professional footballer renowned for his role as a midfielder. The majority of his football career unfolded in France.
Early life & career
Oruma, originally from Warri, Nigeria, made his mark at RC Lens after joining from Bendel Insurance in 1994. Following a loan spell at Nancy, he played a crucial role in Lens’ 1997–98 Ligue 1 title triumph. After the 1998 FIFA World Cup, he ventured to Turkish side Samsunspor and returned to France with Nîmes.
In January 2018, Oruma, who currently faces financial challenges, was discovered in a state of mental disorder, six years after falling victim to fraud by a clergyman and fake oil businessmen. Reportedly losing a substantial sum of N1.2 billion to a questionable investment, he later secured a role as an assistant coach in one of the national teams.
Transferring to Swiss side Servette in 2000, Oruma spent two seasons before returning to France, featuring for Sochaux, Marseille, and Guingamp until 2009. He achieved success, winning the 2003–04 Coupe de la Ligue with Sochaux and the 2008–09 Coupe de France with Guingamp, even though they were a Ligue 2 club at the time. Oruma had a trial with Cardiff City in 2008 but didn’t secure a contract due to fitness concerns.
He concluded his professional football career in 2010 after a season with Greek club AO Kavala.
