Shamar Joseph Wikipedia Biography

Born on August 31, 1999, Shamar Joseph is a cricketer hailing from Guyana. He’s known for representing Guyana in first-class cricket and donning the West Indies jersey in international cricket as a right-arm fast bowler. His international debut for the West Indies took place in January 2024 against Australia at the Adelaide Oval.

Before diving into his professional cricket career, Shamar Joseph worked as a security guard, showcasing his journey from a different profession to the cricketing world.

Joseph hails from Baracara, a quaint community in East Berbice-Corentyne, Guyana, located about 225 km up the Canje River, and it takes a two-day boat journey from the port city of New Amsterdam. Growing up in this remote area meant he had limited access to internet facilities or telephone connections.

In a family of three sisters and five brothers, Joseph’s childhood was shaped by his admiration for cricket legends Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh, the West Indies’ opening bowlers. He spent his days watching their highlights and emulating them in tapeball games around the village. With a lack of proper cricket equipment, he improvised by using fruits like lemons, limes, guavas, and peaches, along with a tape ball, in games dubbed as jungle-land cricket in Baracara. Joseph also honed his skills using makeshift balls made from melted plastic bottles.

His cricket journey began with Tucber Park Cricket Club, where he played in several first-division and second-division matches. Joseph’s dedication and talent eventually led him to become the first test cricketer from Baracara.

Early Life

Before venturing into his cricket career, Joseph, along with his siblings and father, toiled in the logging industry. Their work involved felling and chopping logs in Baracara and transporting the timber down the Canje River to New Amsterdam. A close call with a falling tree prompted Joseph to make a significant life decision. Concerned for his safety, he chose to leave Baracara and relocated to New Amsterdam in search of employment to provide for his family.

In New Amsterdam, Joseph initially found work in construction, serving as a laborer. Later, he secured a position as a security guard at the Amalgamated Security Services in Scotiabank, New Amsterdam. The demands of his security job, with long 12-hour shifts spanning both day and night, left little room for pursuing his passion for cricket. Eventually, with the encouragement of his fiancée, Joseph made the bold choice to resign from his job and wholeheartedly pursue his cricketing aspirations.
