John Ikechukwu Okafor, affectionately known as Mr. Ibu, was a beloved Nigerian actor and comedian born on October 17, 1961, and sadly passing away on March 2, 2024. With a career that spanned over 200 Nollywood films, he became a household name, especially through the popular Mr. Ibu series. Mr. Ibu hailed from Umunekwu in Nigeria’s former Eastern Region, which is now part of Nkanu West Local Government Area in Enugu State. His journey began after completing elementary school in 1974 when, following his father’s passing, he relocated to Sapele to live with his brother. In Sapele, he took up various odd jobs to finance his education and support his family, undertaking roles such as a hairstylist, delving into photography, and working in a crate production company.
Despite facing financial challenges, he managed to complete secondary school and secured admission to the College of Education in Yola. Unfortunately, due to ongoing financial struggles, he had to withdraw from the institution. However, determined to pursue his education, he later enrolled at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) in Enugu when his financial situation improved.
Career
Okafor acted in more than 200 Nollywood films including Mr. Ibu (2004), Mr. Ibu 2 (2005), Mr. Ibu and His Son, Coffin Producers, Husband Suppliers, International Players, Mr. Ibu in London (2005), Police Recruit (2003), 9 Wives (2005), Ibu in Prison (2006) and Keziah (2007).
Okafor also ventured into music for a short period of time. On 15 October 2020, he released his songs titled “This girl” and “Do you know”.
Okafor was known as “Nigeria’s Borat” and in 2012 described homosexuality in Nollywood as akin to a virus, saying “If there is any way in this world that people can make them stop it or kill it, please do it
