Ireti Kingibe Biography

Ireti Heebah Kingibe, born on June 2, 1954, is a Nigerian civil engineer and politician. In the 2023 Nigerian Senate elections, she secured a seat representing the FCT under the Labour party. Notably, she is the younger sister of Ajoke Muhammed, the wife of former Nigerian head of state Murtala Muhammed.

Education

Ireti’s educational journey began at Emotan Preparatory School, followed by Queen’s College Lagos and Washington Irving High School for her secondary education. She earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota.

Career & Politics

Her professional career kicked off as a Quality Control Engineer with Bradley Precast Concrete Inc. before transitioning to the Minnesota Department of Transportation Design unit. She served as an engineer from 1979 to 1991 and fulfilled her mandatory service year in Nigeria from 1981 to 1982, working as a project supervisor with the Nigerian Air Force base in Ikeja, Lagos.

In 1982, Ireti joined the New Nigeria Construction Company as a planning engineer and later worked as a consultant for Belsam Limited in 1985. Between 1990 and 1994, she served as the regional engineer for Lodigiani Nigeria Limited in Lagos. Currently, she holds the position of a senior partner at Kelnic Associates, Abuja.

Her political journey commenced in 1990 when she was appointed Adviser to the National Chairman of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP). Over the years, she navigated different political affiliations, including the All Nigeria People’s Party, People’s Democratic Party, and All Progressive Congress (APC). In 2022, Ireti joined the Labour Party, winning the FCT Senatorial seat in the 2023 elections. She pledged her basic salary to a special fund addressing infrastructural deficits in rural communities within the nation’s capital.

Recognized for her contributions, Ireti Heebah Kingibe was appointed as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs in the 10th Senate on August 8, 2023.

Ireti has previously married a famous politician, civil servant, and diplomat named Baba Gana Kingibe who is currently working for the All Progressives Congress Party since 2015.
