Frida Kahlo Biography

Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón, born on July 6, 1907, and passing away on July 13, 1954, was a renowned Mexican painter recognized for her numerous portraits, self-portraits, and art pieces influenced by Mexico’s nature and cultural artifacts. Drawing inspiration from the country’s vibrant culture, she used a simple folk art style to delve into questions surrounding identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race within Mexican society.

Early Life

Frida Kahlo had a passion for art from a young age, getting drawing lessons from printmaker Fernando Fernández, who happened to be her father’s friend. She filled notebooks with her sketches. In 1925, she started working outside of school to support her family. Initially employed as a stenographer, she later became a paid apprentice in engraving under Fernández. Despite impressing him with her talent, she didn’t see art as a career option back then.

At the age of 18, Kahlo endured a serious bus accident that left her in constant pain for the rest of her life. Confined to bed for three months during her recovery, she turned to painting. Initially considering a career as a medical illustrator to blend her interests in science and art, Kahlo’s mother provided her with a custom-made easel for painting in bed, and her father lent her some oil paints. Placing a mirror above the easel, she could paint herself.

For Kahlo, painting became a way to delve into questions about identity and existence. She expressed, “I paint myself because I am often alone and I am the subject I know best.” The accident and the isolating recovery period fueled her desire to “begin again, painting things just as she saw them with her own eyes and nothing more.”
