Early Life

At the age of 18, Kahlo endured a serious bus accident that left her in constant pain for the rest of her life. Confined to bed for three months during her recovery, she turned to painting. Initially considering a career as a medical illustrator to blend her interests in science and art, Kahlo’s mother provided her with a custom-made easel for painting in bed, and her father lent her some oil paints. Placing a mirror above the easel, she could paint herself.
For Kahlo, painting became a way to delve into questions about identity and existence. She expressed, “I paint myself because I am often alone and I am the subject I know best.” The accident and the isolating recovery period fueled her desire to “begin again, painting things just as she saw them with her own eyes and nothing more.”
